THE LIFE AND SCIENTIFIC WORK OF MYKOLA EVDOKYMOV (1868–1941), A UKRAINIAN ASTRONOMER: A HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL STUDY

М.А. BALYSHEV Nauka naukozn. 2022, 1(115): 105—131 Section: Science and technology history The major milestones of the scientist’s biography and phases of his research and administrative work were established by scrutinizing archived retrospective information resources. The study covered a complete bibliographic analysis of works published by M. Evdokymov who performed regular observations of variable stars, comets, meteor showers, lunar and solar eclipses; explored the Mercury transit of the Sun; carried out seismic research and regular research of astronomical instruments; contributed to the efforts on determining the positions of reference stars for the asteroid (433) Eros.

The research and pedagogical work of prof. Mykola Evdokymov who taught a complex of mathematical, astronomical and geodetic disciplines in various institutions of higher education (Kharkiv State University, Kharkiv Technological Institute, Kharkiv Geodetic Institute, Kharkiv Civil Engineering Institute) was considered.

The scrutiny of archival records provided a documental evidence of the scientist’s activities during institutional transformations in the Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory and the Department of Astronomy in the 1920s; his contribution in the development of geodetic science and the creation of the Time Service in Kharkiv; his public activities in various astronomical societies (German Astronomical Society, All-Russian Astronomical Union, All-Union Longitude Bureau, Astrometric Commission of the Astronomical Council of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union, etc.), where Mykola Evdokymov represented the Ukrainian astronomical science.

Keywords: Mykola Evdokymov, astrometry, circumpolar stars, solar and lunar eclipses, rises and declinations of stars, Kharkiv Astronomical Observatory, Time Service, Kharkiv University, Kharkiv Technological Institute.

References

Abstract: The article is devoted to the investigation of facts from the scientific biography of Mykola Evdokymov, an outstanding Ukrainian astrometrician. The research effort of this talented scientist and research administrator was focused on explorations of the zodiacal and weak circumpolar stars, the inference of their parallax; the determination of the direct rises and declinations of the reference star and the large planets of the Solar System. Despite a number of biographical publications covering some aspects of the astronomer’s research, administrative and pedagogical activities, a comprehensive study reproducing his complete scientific biography could not be found. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to sum up the results of comprehensive historiographic research on the life and work of the astronomer professor Mykola Evdokymov.
