Four periods in the life and scientific activities of M.V. Tchernoyarow are identified: 1909—19 1 7, 1921—1923, 1923—1943, 1947—1964. While a student at Kyiv University in 1909—1915, M.V. Tchernoyarow began his scientific research on cytology and embryology of angiosperms under the supervision of his teacher S.G. Navashin. In 1914, Mykhailo Tchernoyarow was awarded a gold medal for his student scientific work, during his studies at the university he published two scientific articles. In 1921—1923, M.V. Tchernoyarow worked under the supervision of Academician V.I. Lypsky in the botanical garden of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1923—1943, he taught at various higher educational institutions in Kyiv and explored reduction division in plants. The beginning of systematic scientific research at the Department of Biology of the O.O. Bogomolets Kyiv Medical Institute is associated with the name of M.V. Tchernoyarow who was its director in 1930—1939. During this period M.V. Tchernoyarow wrote his most significant scientific works which made his name quite famous among researchers not only in his homeland but also abroad. In 1926, he was elected a member of the German Botanical Society. In 1931, M.V. Tchernoyarow received an invitation to participate in the International Congress of Geneticists in the U.S., but could not attend the congress, although his report was included in the program. In 1947—1964, M.V. Tchernoyarow worked in the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (now M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), where he studied the metamorphosis of plastids in ontogenesis under various developmental conditions in connection with the introduction of woody plants and helped postgraduate students master the methods of cytological and embryological studies.

Keywords: M.V.
