THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS OF THE NAS OF UKRAINE IN THE SPACE SCIENCE

Abstract: Pioneering efforts to build a modern picture of the universe, in which apart from the attraction forces electromagnetic forces occur, was made at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences: in the 1920s, Academician D.O. Grave with students conducted a study of the impact of electric and magnetic forces on the motion of the planets in the solar system. The constructed mathematical model allowed for explaining the deviation between results produced by Newton’s law and the experimental data. The concept of the area in near-Earth space where the solar wind interacts with the geomagnetic field was introduced. In the early 60s of the last century, with help of satellites, this area was discovered and given the name «magnetosphere». The article contains a story about the results of these little-known studies.
