Abstract: The article is devoted to the personality of O.O. Bogomolets, President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1930—1946. It is shown that after the finishing of the medical faculty of Kiev University, a key role in shaping the worldview of the future scientist was played by the I.I. Mechnikov’s student, professor V.V. Podvysotsky, who headed the Department of General Pathology. As noted, it is communication with Mechnikov’s scientific school prompted Bogomolets to study the problems of immunity and reactivity. Article also emphasized influence of another Novorossiysk professor, M.G. Ushinsky, who introduced O.O. Bogomolets to the ideas of the outstanding pathologist V.V. Pashutin and to bacteriological studies. Considerable attention is paid to the role of O.O. Bogomolets in upgrading the structure of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences: the creation of institutions instead of individual laboratories, departments and offices that existed before, providing them with equipment at the modern scientific and technical level and attracting young researchers to the institutes of the Academy. The scientific works of the scientist are analyzed, which mainly concern the study of the reactivity of the organism in the normal and pathological state. It is emphasized that the research of O.O. Bogomolets influenced the development of almost all areas of pathological physiology. He created the concept of the physiological system of connective tissue, developed and introduced into practice antireticular cytotoxic serum (ACS) as an effective remedy for various diseases, where the stimulation of protective forces of the organism and reparative processes is needed.
Keywords: Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, president, general pathology, institute, physiology, antireticular cytotoxic serum.
