B.YE. PATON IN THE GALAXY OF MOST DISTINGUISHED CREATORS OF THE NATIONAL MISSILERY

Abstract: The article contains author’s recollections about B.Ye. Paton’s involvement in creating combat missiles in Design Office “Yuzhnoye” (now “Yuzhnoye State Design Office”) under the supervision of M.K. Yangel and in the earliest projects of S.P. Korolev devoted to manned spacecraft and multiple space stations. The essence of technical problems that were successfully solved by specialists of Ukrainian Academy institutes under the supervision and with the personal involvement of B.Ye. Paton is shown. It is emphasized that the cooperation of M.K. Yangel and B.Ye. Paton was the most visible in creating the operational missile of the second generation, Р-36, which, once appeared, changed the geostrategic situation of that time. Because it was researchers of Ye.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute who developed the method of its tightness assurance – flush-butt welding. B.Ye. Paton, collaborating with Special Design Office-1 and Design Office “Yuzhnoye”, made his contribution in creating the most powerful liquid propellant missile of the fourth generation, Р-36М2. Apart from Ye.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute, the manufacturing and exploitation of all the four generations of operational missiles was supported by dozens of other institutes of the Ukrainian Academy.
The contribution of B.Ye. Paton in strengthening the defense industry of Ukraine after the outbreak of hybrid Russian-Ukrainian war in the east of Ukraine is highlighted. It was the launch of the targeted science & technology program “Research and Development on Problems of Increasing the Defense Capacity and Security of the State”, enabling to expand cooperation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Military Forces of Ukraine and military-industrial companies, which promoted its effective implementation.
