Abstract: The evolution and institutionalization of science and technology history studies in the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is shown. It concerns with the organization of departments and activities of distinguished scientists. The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences was founded on 14 November, 1918. In the spring of 1928, academician I. Malinovsky proposed to organize a Commission on the History of Knowledge at the Academy. The Commission for History of Natural Sciences was established on 13 February, 1934, and existed until 1942. In 1956, the Department for History of Mathematics (headed by Y. Shtokalo) was organized at the Institute of Mathematics. In December 1948, academician V. Danilevsky proposed to create the Institute for History of Engineering, to study the history of national engineering and technical sciences, technical education, technical literature, technical terminology. On 11 March, 1949, the Department for Technology History at the Institute of Heat Power Engineering and the Commission for Technology History (both headed by V. Danilevsky) were organized. It was planned to transform the Commission into the Institute for Technology History, but the intention was not realized due to lack of funds.

On 4 January, 1963, on the basis of the Department for History of Mathematics and the Department for Technology History, the Sector for History of Natural Science and Technology (originally called the Sector for History of Technology and Natural Science, headed by Y. Shtokalo) was organized. In 1986, based on the Sector and the divisions of the Council for the Study of the Productive Forces of Ukraine, the Center (now Institute) for Scientific and Technological Potential and Science History Studies was organized (headed by G. Dobrov), where the Department for History of Natural Science and Department of Technology were established (now the Department of History and Sociology of Science and Technology). The rich information about the publication activity on science and technology history is given.
