Abstract: Continuing the discussion on the ways of optimizing the age structure of research staff in the NAS of Ukraine, the article devoted to gender aspect. Variations of the ratio of the males’ and females’ numbers are studied at the level of NAS of Ukraine and by group of science in 2006— 2015, with projection on the age structure of the researchers. The analysis made by data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine shows that the number of male researchers in the NAS of Ukraine has been falling faster than female researchers, with the age profile of female researchers balanced far better, especially in social sciences and humanities. The high discrepancy towards elder age groups in natural, technical and social sciences, resulting from long-term conservation of male research personnel, has been smoothed by female researchers. The analysis of the population of research organizations of the NAS of Ukraine shows that the implemented research policy regarding males of younger and middle generations as a driving force for its radical renewal has been in fact ineffective.
