Abstract: The article contains results of the analysis into the process of formation and transformation of the Academy science in Ukraine throughout the past century under the pressure of cardinal change in the relations between social and political institutes. The close link between the radical political and socio-economic transformations and key change in the academic sphere — its administration system, hierarchical structure, resourcing, ideology, moral and mental condition of researchers — is shown. The transformations that were changing the face of the Ukrainian science system in 1918–1991 and had impact on its reshaping in the new historic era are highlited. The main consequences of these system transformations that had fundamental effects for formation of the science system in Ukraine after 1991 in form of problems that are difficult to cope with in technical and psychological aspect are demonstrated.
