Abstract: The article is devoted to the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Central State Scienti fic and Technical Archive (CDNTA) of Ukraine. The content of the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR “On Measures to Improve Archival Affairs in the Republic” from December 25, 1969, No 688 is analyzed, which laid the beginning to its history. The process of elaborating the principles underlying the collection of archive records is described. The attention is paid to the innovative approach of the Central State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documents of the USSR in the context of the development of the world archival services. The documentary evidence is provided about the scientific effort of archivists to scrutinize the requirements for selecting scientific and technical documentation (STD) for centralized archive storage, by type of document: scientific research, design, technological and project. A list of criteria for assessing the value of research is provided. The information capacities of archival STD, with focus on reports on research works of the scientific institutes, are described. It is estimated that in time of its operation the CDNTA of Ukraine collected the work records of almost 80 scientific groups. A review of the most informative collections with reports on research, personal records of scientist, and a collection of oral histories of science and technology is ma de. It is demonstrated that the documents of the National Archival Holdings have extra ordinary significance for forming the source base of the history of the Ukrainian science, as they provide an original historic source in which the fundamental novelty of the solution for a scientific and technical problem and the influence of scientific and technical ideas on its development is fixed.
