THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING ACTIVITIES IN THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE

Abstract: Main areas of the scientific and publishing activity of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from the time of its foundation are revealed. A short review of the history of the Scientific Publishing and Editing and Publishing Council (now — the Scientific Publishing Council of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) is given. A more detailed description is about the operation of the Academy’s Publishing House “Naukova Dumka”, which gained global recognition in the second half of 20 century. The most detailed data concerns the new phase of academic printing and publishing in Ukraine, beginning with 1992, after Ukraine gained independence. In the earlier half of 1990s, printing and publishing adopted new principles and technologies, was transferred from “Naukova Dumka” to research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine, and new ways for dissemination of printed matter were sought as the old dissemination system had ruined with the collapse of the USSR. The purposeful effort could increase the statistical data on output of books and periodicals. Eventually, in 2002 the Publishing House “Akademperiodyka” of the NAS of Ukraine was established. The current operative functions of the Scientific Publishing Council are highlighted: publishing of normative documents, collection and processing of statistical data on Academy’s printing output, printing of socially significant matter (glossaries, encyclopedias etc.), introduction of advanced information and communication technologies and world standards in the domestic printing and publishing sector etc. Statistical data on printing output in the NAS of Ukraine in 1991—2017 is shown. The article is devoted to the 100th Anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
