Abstract: The article highlights important historical facts and scientific data that reveal the participation of scientists of the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in the development and application of the method of electroslag remelting for the production of parts of combat tracked vehicles in the early 70’s of the 20th century. This reflects their contribution to the development of the field of special electrometallurgy and metal technology. The main sources for the preparation of the study were the declassified archival documents on defense topics of the USSR of the Central State Archive of Public Associations of Ukraine, which were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. General scientific and special-historical methods are applied (retrospective, problem-chronological, comparative-historical, analysis, synthesis and classification). The main factors affecting the quality of electroslag metal are revealed, in particular, the amount and composition of the flux, the electrical mode and the technology of smelting the initial billet. The study of the source metal of electric arc melting, which was subjected to electroslag remelting under different brands of fluxes, as well as with metal deoxidation in the process of electroslag remelting with micro impurities of rare earth metals, is considered. Methods of assessing non-metallic inclusions in steel are presented. It is shown that quality research was carried out by scientists of the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR with scientists of the Institute of Physics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and Zaporizhzhya Machine-Building Institute. The content of scientific and technical developments and directions of research on increasing the durability of stamped tracks by specialists of these scientific institutions were highlighted. The use of archival documents made it possible to more thoroughly reconstruct the history of the development of scientific research on the development of parts of combat tracked vehicles by the method of electroslag remelting.
