Abstract: The article is focused on the activities and impact of G.M. Dobrov, an outstanding researcher in science and technology history studies, a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1988) and the International Academy of Sciences History in Paris (1965), associated with rise and institutionalization of science and technology history studies in Ukraine.
Dobrov defended the thesis on history of coal mining engineering at the Institute for Thermal Power of the Academy of Sciences (AN) of the UkrSSR in 1954. The department for technology history at the Institute for Thermal Power was created in 1949. In January 1963, the Unit for Technology and Science History (the Unit for Science and Technology History from 1970) was created on the basis of the Technology history department and the Mathematics history department at the Institute for Mathematics of the AN of the UkrSSR, which, together with the Center for Scientific and Technological Potential and Science History Studies at the Council for Studies of the Productive Forces of Ukraine of the AN of the UkrSSR, was incorporated in the Center (now the Institute) for Scientific and Technological Potential and Science History Studies of the AN of the UkrSSR, which director was G.M. Dobrov. Dobrov had worked in science and technology history for 18 years: from January 1953 till December 1955 – junior researcher, from December 1961 till February 1963 – senior researcher at the technology history department of the Institute for Thermal Power of the AN of the UkrSSR; from 1954 he was a member of the editorial board of «Assays in Science and Technology History»; in June 1960 he was awarded the title of senior researcher in science and technology history; from 1954 till 1965 he was a research manager of the Commission on Technology History; from 1963 till 1964 he worked as a senior researcher, from January 1964 – as the head of the technology history department; from 1966 till 1968 he was the head of the department for computerized methods for processing of science history information at the Unit for Science and Technology History at the Institute for History of the AN of the UkrSSR, where techniques for the automated search of sources were developed. Dobrov is the author of more than 30 fundamental works on science and technology history.
